DBMS High School Crew had a stellar fall season with gold medals for the Boys and Girls Varsity at Mystic Connecticut, bronze medals for the Boys Varsity at the New Hampshire Championships, the best showing ever by Duxbury at the Textile Regatta in Lowell, and the honor of competing at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, the largest rowing regatta in the world.
The season culminated on October 25th at the Massachusetts State Championships at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA. Duxbury placed 4th overall in the team trophy category with teams racing the 5k course.
State Championships were the third race of the season for the Novice team coached by Chris Lee and Philip Hooper. The Girls Novices (Katie Connelly, Mary Donovan, Brittany Aylmer, Kelly Juliano, Victoria Sanchez, Jillian Sylvester, Kelton Vuilleumier, Brooke Withington and Cox Gerry Stillman) completed their season placing 7th among all Public Schools in the State. The Boy Novice Team (Mike Kracov, Steve Kravitz, Gerard Juliano, Pat Gearin, Kyle Archambault, Kyle Jones, Stephen du Mont, Ian Wilson, Cox Sam Williams) had their best race of the season and placed 2nd overall winning silver medals all around.
Great weather prevailed as the Girls Varsity team, coached by Marge Vecchi and Cap Kane, rowed some great races. The Girls 8+ (Emmi O’Day, Nina West, Marley McDermott, Natalie Bowen, Maggie Hickey, Greer Cully, Michele Segalla, Hannah Murdock, Cox Kelly McElduff) raced to 5th, moving up 2 places from last year. The Girls Varsity 4+ (Madi Duddy, Kate Dennison, Maddie Conway, Karli Tobias, Cox Amy Laputz) had a strong showing in 8th place out of 14. Other Varsity rowers representing Duxbury were Emma Therrien, Anna McGeady, Anna Grubb and Kelsea Tower. Brighid Davis and Cox Zach Peterson fell ill and were greatly missed.
The Boys Varsity coached by Kristen McCarthy had great results at their last race of the season. The Boys 4+ (Buzz Ryan, Nick Tinkham, Mark Passeri, Andrew Whalen, Cox Abby Armstrong) started in third and quickly overtook rowing powerhouse Wayland-Weston to place 2nd overall. The Boys 8+ (Ben Potash, Alex Kosharek, Nick Mulone, Sam Habgood, Chris Scavongelli, Davis Muller, Kyle Dame, Jonathan Frye, Cox Caroline Hickey), seeded 3rd in the State, blasted 2nd seed Shrewsbury by 32 seconds and finished only 6 seconds behind Wayland-Weston for silver medals and 2nd place in the State.
